How well does your school work with first responders?

When it comes to our children’s education and safety, community partnerships are crucial. School personnel are responsible for their students’ well-being, and they work with their local organizations and agencies to encourage learning, volunteerism, leadership, and most importantly, to keep their students safe. Educational staff should work hand-in-hand with emergency first responders to help ensure that every aspect of school safety is planned, practiced, and they’re ready for anything.

It can be difficult sometimes to facilitate those relationships yet extremely worthwhile, as seen at an interoperability training a few weeks ago at Indianapolis’ Herron High School. The meeting brought administrators, school safety team members, and representatives from Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Public Safety Communications to the training table. They discussed best practices of connecting the school’s two-way radios with first responders’ two-way radios during an emergency. During a crisis, first responders have the ability to open a direct line of communication with the school personnel and safety team members in order to provide them with additional support on a secure, reliable network.

“The staff at Herron High School is always working to make the school safer and the training program really shines a spotlight on our communications throughout the school and within the community,” said Tim Porter, Director of Operations at Herron High School. “Knowing that Herron High School can have real time information flow during an emergency on radios between our trained safety team at the school and public safety is a relief.”

The training session concluded with the school and first responders enthusiastic to continue the discussion on how best to work together. “These are conversations that absolutely need to happen,” said Porter.

Every school district is different in their safety practices. One of our best examples of proactivity in schools safety is in Pueblo, Colorado. The district started out by discussing various all-hazards scenarios at each school. They would refer to the district’s crisis plans to effectively respond to the scenarios. Doing so allowed them to discover, mold, and develop best practices for teamwork day to day and during emergencies. They later learned, through exercising, that their ultimate best tool for team work is the two-way radio at the school, with professional responders, and with responding district personnel; all instantly able to communicate on a common channel.

First responders came to the table to provide their input on how the school could better their part in any response. They focused on the initial trigger to the incident, lock down, lock out, evacuate or shelter, how and when they call 911, situation size up evaluation, and sharing information in "real time." Through the SchoolSAFE Certified Ready Schools Program by Motorola, those relationships flourished and through the program, teamwork and training for all is required, so is adequate FCC licensed radios, the SchoolSAFE physical network bridging the channels together, tactical interoperable communications exercising, and sustainability through maintenance of all hardware, software, and training.

We have seen that decision-makers at the district and in public safety grasp the importance of working together to create the most effective and timely response. Please do share this information with your school or district.
