ASBOI Members:

I would first like to thank all of those that participated in last months topic on managing your day. The comments and advice were very helpful and I hope this is a sign of what future conversations will look like. This month I would like to discuss how electronic and social media have changed the way schools make announcements.

Rapid City schools is in the far western portion of South Dakota. Our district covers 400 square miles. We have about 14,000 students, so when we close school for weather, or make a district wide announcement we have a challenge. We have relied on traditional media ). until recently ( newspaper, TV, radio ). The most recent closing during the Atlas blizzard in October showed us the value of non traditional media ( twitter, auto dialers, district web page, facebook, etc. ). Our experience was that the message was relayed faster and actually picked up by the traditional media outlets quicker than the calling trees that are established in policy.

My question is this: What are your experiences good and bad with the use of non-traditional electronic media for communicating important district announcements like school closings?

Again thank you to those that participated last month, we hope to get more participation this month. Have a happy, safe holiday season.
