Senator Lamar Alexander went on record today saying that there is a “remarkable consensus” on the Senate’s NCLB rewrite, going on to say that the current Senate bill retains the annual testing requirement, but dramatically reduces the consequences for low achieving schools.

Senator Alexander believes that there are other measures for student achievement that are more appropriate, that would reduce the number of tests students take each year. He goes on to say that testing is not the issue, but instead, the accountability systems in place have left school systems no other choice but to add on additional standardized tests. He said, "The current rewrite is the most effective plan to advance higher academic standards, better teaching, and real accountability."

Alexander said the intent of the Senate bill is to continue with measurement of the students’ academic progress, but allow the states and local school districts to make decisions about how best to improve student achievement.

The Senate is currently scheduled to continue its debate on the current bill.
