Greg Long
Two-time Big Wave World Champion
"Riding the Waves of Opportunity"
Greg Long is recognized as one of the best and most successful big wave surfers in the world. In a career that now spans over two decades, he has won virtually every title and award in the big wave surfing arena. Within his community of surfing peers, he is also respected as one of the most thoughtful and best prepared.
He developed a deep respect for the sea, at a young age, along with a methodical approach to both understanding and navigating its ever-changing and often fear-invoking conditions. His obsessive dedication to training both physically and mentally and in-depth study of ocean risk management are the foundation of his career and surfing achievements and what he also acknowledges are the reasons he is still alive today.
In 2012, while attempting to paddle into the largest waves ever attempted at the infamous “Cortes Bank,” an underwater seamount 100 miles off the coast of Southern California, he sustained a wipeout that held him underwater for four consecutive waves, rendering him unconscious. His body was thankfully located by his water safety team in time, and he was able to make a full recovery.
The aftermath of this incident, however, left him questioning whether or not he would ever return to the ocean or surf big waves again.
Greg will take you on a journey sharing his greatest lessons learned within a life of high seas adventures and how the fear he regularly encountered became his greatest form of motivation. He will dive deep into his tumultuous near-death experience and how the most challenging and disruptive event ultimately became the greatest gift that forever redefined his values, interpretation of success, and direction in life.
