  • 1.  ED Federal Commission on School Safety Seeking Public Comment

    Posted 06-04-2018 08:57
    The Department of Education (ED) issued a Dear Stakeholder letter announcing that ED's Federal Commission on School Safety is holding its first listening session on Wednesday, June 6, to provide the public an opportunity to share views on how schools, districts, LEAs/SEAs, and other educational institutions can improve school safety. The first session is at ED's HQ office in Washington, D.C. (Lyndon Baines Johnson Building) but there will be three other listening sessions held in other regions of the U.S. (dates/locations are TBD).

    The open public forum will be divided into two sessions – a morning session (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. EST) and an afternoon session (1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST). Those who would like to sign up for a five minute time slot to speak at the session, as well as those who would like to observe, should register here. Individuals who would like to present comments and/or observe the listening session must register. The Commission will accept walk-in registrations for speaking and/or observing on a first-come, first-served basis for each session, until capacity is reached.

    ED will live-stream the session here, and a transcript will be posted shortly after the event on ED's website. Anyone may submit written comments to ED by email at Safety@ed.gov.

    Today, the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) signed onto a statement with The School Superintendents Association (AASA), Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA), Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents, National Rural Education Association (NREA), and the National Rural Education Advocacy Consortium. The statement recommended steps/strategies that ED's Federal School Safety Commission could focus on to help keep students safe at school, and were delivered at a public listening session on school safety today:

    • Providing opportunities to improve access to mental health treatment, including efforts that raise awareness about mental illness and the effectiveness of treatment, reduce barriers to the recruitment of mental health professionals, and provide training related to violence prevention;
    • Best practices for school‐based threat assessment and violence prevention strategies; and
    • Best practices for school buildings and campus security from federal government components, including the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, and also from other state, local, and private sector sources.

    Please read the full comments here. A recording of the hearing is available here.
