ASBO International is working with AASA, The School Superintendents Association to spread the word about how the winding down of the COVID federal public health emergency (PHE) period will impact Medicaid access for children and families. We hope the information below is helpful for district leaders who wish to communicate the impact of this federal policy change with students' families.

During COVID-19, children who were on Medicaid had stable coverage under their health insurance plan due to a federal "continuous coverage" policy, which is set to expire March 31. Under that rule, states were required to allow Medicaid recipients to remain in the program during the pandemic, without requiring families to fill out regular paperwork to continue demonstrating eligibility. The end of this policy means that states will start reviewing their Medicaid enrollment lists again, which could lead many participants to lose coverage if they don't fill out the necessary paperwork to remain on the plan.

To help inform families of this issue, AASA released a customizable toolkit designed for district leaders to communicate how the winding down of this policy could impact students. It includes an email template, call script, sample social media posts, a one-pager, digital banners for newsletters, and a blog to share information with stakeholders.

Please feel free to share this toolkit widely to inform families about what they need to do to keep their children covered on their Medicaid plans. If you have any questions, please contact us.
