Sneak Peek from Accents Online July 21, 2016

If understanding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a challenge in your school district, there’s an interactive online toolkit that can help.

This series of one-page resources, which can be used individually or collectively as a comprehensive guide, focuses on understanding three primary areas:

  • The importance of data collection and sharing.
  • How to best protect student privacy when using personally identifiable information from FERPA-protected student education records.
  • How to manage shared data using integrated data systems.

While highlighting FERPA’s federal privacy protections, the toolkit discusses why data sharing is important, under which circumstances it’s legal, how to obtain consent to share it, and acceptable exceptions for obtaining consent. It provides several data spotlights, links to best privacy practices, succinct tests on the three consent exception categories, an infographic that dispels FERPA myths, an introduction to available tools, and a host of resources, including sample templates and reference materials.
