Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee considered and adopted the FY13 LHHS appropriations bill put forth by the subcommittee earlier this week.

The subcommittee's bill was subject to amendment. Many of the amendments were related to labor and health care. Below are the amendments related to education:

  • The manager's amendment provides three amendments related to education:
    • Sen. Shelby introduced an amendment to restore the $50 million cut to the Math and Science partnership program, to be paid for using the proposed increase for Race to the Top.
    • Sen. Murray included a Pell eligibility amendment that reinstates 'ability to benefit'.
    • Sens. Alexander and Mikulski included an amendment for a study related to higher education regulations.
  • Sens. Landrieu and Alexander proposed an amendment to provide a funding increase for charter schools, using funds from the School Improvement Grants. The amendment was defeated (12-17).

  • Sen. Moran proposed an amendment to increase funding to the National Institutes for Health. This increase would come from an across-the-board cut to all programs (including Title I and IDEA). The amendment was defeated (12-18).
