Recently, many school business professionals have expressed concerns about experiencing extensive technical and customer support issues while navigating the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) electronic filing system (FIRE) to submit 1099 forms before the January 31 filing deadline.

In response to this matter, ASBO International's Legislative Advisory Committee (LAC) convened to discuss how the association could advocate for the profession. The LAC decided to have ASBO International send a letter to the IRS and Department of Treasury to share member concerns, and to encourage school business professionals and state ASBO affiliates who are interested in advocating on this issue to contact their federal officials. By raising this issue with House Representatives and Senators, school business professionals can encourage their lawmakers to send a Congressional inquiry to the Office of Tax Policy at Treasury, which will put additional pressure on the IRS to investigate and rectify these issues.

If you want to join us in advocating on this issue, contact your federal lawmakers about issues you've experienced with e-filing this year, and urge the IRS to improve its communications and engagement with school district stakeholders. Attached to this post are advocacy letters sent by ASBO International, New Mexico ASBO, and Zuni Public School District in New Mexico, for reference to help you craft your message. If you need help contacting your officials, please email ASBO International's Director of Advocacy & Research at asbousa@asbointl.org

We thank our members for bringing this issue to our attention. Please contact ASBO International if you ever have a policy-related question or issue that you need an answer to or would like us to consider advocating for.
