Introduction to The Henry Ford

Description: Gain insight into The Henry Ford and the historical stories of American resourcefulness, ingenuity and innovation that are embedded in its collection. We will build a foundational understanding of the vision and mission of The Henry Ford, and the ways in which the organization provides leadership and impact through the collection and its stories of innovation. The session will culminate with an interactive Kahoot! quiz, in which we will begin to delve more deeply into some of those innovation stories.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of the breadth and depth of innovation leadership stories.

Description: Develop a working knowledge of The Henry Ford’s Model i Learning Framework that we will be using to scaffold our leadership development experiences and will provide a foundation for engaging with the rest of the sessions. The ASBO International 2023 Eagle Award Winners will then have a panel discussion about what innovative leadership means to them in their experiences as school business officials.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Review Henry Ford’s Model i and ASBO International’s Learning and Leadership frameworks.
  • Create cognitive connections between the two frameworks as a foundational basis for future leadership learning experience.

Tour Guides: Members of The Henry Ford’s Learning & Engagement Team

Description: During this session, we will deeply dive into some key stories of innovation leadership highlighted within a tour of the Museum of American Innovation. We will be encouraged to apply the Model i innovation learning and ASBO International’s leadership frameworks to those stories as we begin to recognize the habits and actions that historical and current-day innovative leaders use as they engage in their work.
We will then take another deep dive into a historical case study of leadership in innovation as part of a team. Learn how Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Charles and Ray Emes, Abraham Lincoln, the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford, and others led their work, inspired their audiences, and applied innovative habits and actions within their lives. In this session, we will present as a team on each of these case studies as innovation journeys and build an understanding of how the innovation habits, actions, and leadership competencies apply across functions within work and disciplines within learning.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Apply the two leadership learning frameworks to three highlight stories of history showcased in the Museum of American Innovation as part of a tour.
  • Apply the two leadership learning frameworks to one further story from The Henry Ford’s collection of innovation, ingenuity, and resourcefulness.

We will discover how these vital organizational leaders apply the Model i framework to their workstreams and the critical leadership competencies they have leaned into to help drive the vision and mission of the school and the larger organization.
Learn more about how leaders apply the Model i habits, actions, and leadership competencies to their work and discover the innovation projects currently underway at Henry Ford Academy and The Henry Ford.

Description: Engage in an activity that encourages each of us to reflect on a personal journey of innovation leadership and map that journey utilizing the languages of the frameworks that have been shared. There will be an opportunity to share those journeys as part of an Innovation Journey Gallery Walk.

Museum of American Innovation Curator Presentation – Stories of Leadership in Innovation

Description: Take an innovation leadership journey into the stories that we can find in the Museum of American Innovation. This presentation will give an insight into the ways in which the curation team at The Henry Ford work to tell the stories of innovation and leadership through the collection themes and exhibits that are foundational to the museum and America’s history. We will uncover details from those stories that only the curators know, and we will learn about how these stories inspire those curators in their own work, their own leadership, and their own innovations.

Description: Spend time in the Museum of American Innovation, discovering more details about the collection’s stories that have been shared throughout the day or finding new stories of innovation leadership. We will further dissect what we learned from the day by engaging with those stories and applying innovators' relevant habits and actions and the leadership competencies we are each working on to enhance our work. Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their innovation and leadership journeys, and how they resonate with the stories of American innovation embedded in the museum.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the innovation leadership stories shared on day one.
  • Discuss the innovation leadership habits, actions, and competencies the stories from day one showcase.
  • Apply the lessons of the stories from day one to your leadership approaches.

Description: During this session we will uncover the ways in which The Henry Ford works to share the stories of American resourcefulness, ingenuity, and innovation beyond its walls into classrooms and workspaces across the country and the globe. Take a tour of The Henry Ford’s educational “virtual venue” inHub and find out how we can bring the stories of innovation and leadership into our workplaces. The session will culminate with an interactive Kahoot! Quiz, where we will practice the ways in which we can activate The Henry Ford collection in our lives, schools, and communities.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Develop a knowledge of the stories from The Henry Ford’s collection that are accessible to you within your workplace and how to apply them.

Leadership Shared Equitably by All Workshop – Introducing the Innovation Atlas

Description: In the second part of this session, we will discuss the GIS data analytics tool developed by Henry Ford in partnership with the Opportunity Insight group from Harvard and Stanford, which pulls from multiple filterable data sources to build a picture of access to innovation in the United States. We will learn about the tool, the data that supports it, and how we and others can use it to help reduce the innovation opportunity disparity experienced within our communities and across the country. We will learn how other educational administrators and business officers are using this tool to uncover the barriers to innovation and the development of innovation ecosystems at the school, local, state, and federal levels.

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:

  • Describe an innovation ecosystem development data tool and how it can be used to understand the innovation ecosystems of your school.
  • Discuss how an innovation ecosystem development data tool can be used to support your work as a school business official.

Leading as Part of a Team Competitive Challenge – A Custard Catastrophe

Description: Take part in solving a fun ‘real-world’ problem as a team. During this session, we will work in small table teams to find a working solution to help The Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village staff overcome a critical situation involving the venue’s renowned frozen custard. Each team will present their solution as part of this competitive challenge. Attendees will reflect upon the innovation habits, actions, and leadership competencies demonstrated during this workshop activity.

We will uncover details from those stories that only the curators know, and we will continue to learn about how these stories inspire those curators in their work, leadership, and innovations.

Description: Use the Goose Chase app to spend time in Greenfield Village and participate in a Scavenger Hunt competition. Prizes will be awarded during the closing session at the end of the day. This session is designed to allow participants to discover the foundational stories in Greenfield Village while visiting the buildings in which key innovation leaders of American history lived and worked.

We will have the opportunity to evaluate the conference engagement experiences and identify those we would like to apply with the teams we lead.

  • Identify three key leadership learnings and highlight one habit, action, or competency you will practice and develop over the next six weeks.
