Creating an effective partnership between the Affiliate Board of Directors and Executive Director is critical for the success of the organization. Together, participants will explore the skills, capabilities, and best practices that create the trust, rigor, and culture required to lead effectively. The session will include time for Affiliate specific reflection and the opportunity to hear and learn from others. 

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:  

  • Discuss what makes associations unique. 

  • Discuss how to lead through the current environment including: multi-generational workforce/membership, representative governance, and professional burnout.  

  • Examine ways to establish and maintain the appropriate roles and responsibilities of Volunteer Leaders and the Executive Director/staff.

Description:  

Self-awareness is the accelerant to growth as a leader. In this session, we’ll emphasize the role of emotional intelligence (EQ) in fostering self-awareness. Through engaging exercises, discussions, and the sharing of practical principles, participants will address current leadership challenges using an emotional intelligence lens, gaining innovative perspectives for dynamic and aware leadership approaches.   

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:  

  • Describe the essential components of EQ, including the four primary components, twelve sub-components, and EQ's role in leadership.  

  • Apply EQ to a real-world challenge and identify a clear pathway for improving the situation.  

  • Recognize their own emotions and how they affect their thoughts and behaviors. 

  • Identify leadership strengths and opportunities for improvement, fostering fresh insights through an emotional intelligence lens, particularly in addressing current challenges.

Friday’s morning session will begin with the concepts of growth and fixed mindsets, exploring how self-awareness can be harnessed to nurture a growth mindset. We’ll then dive into DiSC styles, gaining a better understanding of our own and others’ unique styles through the DiSC assessment. With these foundational understandings in place, we’ll focus on discovering the essence of social awareness in team dynamics, highlighting the importance of recognizing positive and negative team traits.  

At the end of this activity, learners should be able to:  

  • Define the key differences between growth and fixed mindsets and leverage self-awareness to cultivate a growth mindset. 
  • Identify and understand their own DiSC style and recognize the styles of others using the DiSC assessment.

Participants will also delve into the complexities of leading strong teams and gain an understanding of how situational leadership amplifies a leader’s ability to influence outcomes and inspire others. This course provides vital leadership skills and valuable insights for effective team development, authentic relationship-building, and adaptive leadership.
