This morning, the Department of Education (ED) published a press release announcing details for LEAs who wish to apply for the Every Student Succeeds Act's (ESSA) new weighted student funding pilot program, or the new "student-centered" funding pilot program.

The release says the program grants flexibility that "will allow school districts to combine eligible Federal funds with State and local funds in order to allocate resources to schools based on the number of students and the corresponding level of need," and is "widely considered to be a modern, transparent, and quantifiable way to allocate resources to the students most in need."

The application process will open February 7, 2018. For LEAs planning to participate in the pilot during the 2018-19 school year, applications are due by March 12, 2018. For those planning on participating for the 2019-20 school year, applications are due by July 15, 2018. Application forms will be available for download on February 7 on ED's website, and may be submitted to weightedfundingpilot@ed.gov.

Is your district planning on applying for the new pilot program? Feel free to discuss and share your thoughts and find more information here.

Earlier this year, the Department of Education (ED) announced a new ESSA student-centered weighted-funding pilot program. The purpose of the pilot is to allow local education agencies (LEAs) the flexibility to combine state, local, and federal funds to allocate to schools via a formula "that provides additional funding for students from low-income families, English learners, and other disadvantaged students."

The first round of pilot program applications were accepted in March, but ED is now accepting a second round of applications by July 15, 2018. To help LEAs learn more about the pilot and decide if they wish to apply this summer, ED is hosting two webinars, each of which will be recorded and posted on their website.
To join a webinar, click the link for the relevant session above. Webinar recordings and slides will be posted with related resources on ED's website here.

Please note that an LEA applying for the pilot by July 15, 2018 will be proposing to implement their system in the 2019-2020 school year. If you have any questions, please contact WeightedFundingPilot@ed.gov
